چکیده

Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas’ disease, is highly persistent in blood collected and stored in blood banks (I, 2). Indeed, transfusions constitute the second most important avenue of Chagas’ disease transmission in Chile, the most important being provided by the man-biting insect vector Triatoma infestans. The specific area endemic for Chagas’ disease in Chile covers roughly the northern half of the country, extending from latitude 18’ South (Region I) in the extreme north, through the metropolitan areas of Santiago and Valparaiso, and down to about latitude 34’ South (Region VI). The number of infected persons in this territory has been estimated at 350,000 (3). An earlier article by the authors (4) reported the presence of blood donors serologically positive for Chagas’ disease in two parts of Chile with differing prevalences of infection; and investigators inother Latin American countries-including Brazil, Venezuela, and

Prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in blood donors in El Salvador between 2001 and 2011.

INTRODUCTION El Salvador is regarded as a highly endemic country for Chagas disease, as evidenced by the relatively high estimated positive serology rate for Trypanosoma cruzi among blood donors. This study aimed to identify the factors contributing to this high rate by analyzing changes in T. cruzi seroprevalence. METHODOLOGY Secondary data were collected from 31 blood banks operated by the ...

Congenital Trypanosoma cruzi infection in neonates and infants from two regions of Chile where Chagas' disease is endemic.

Chagas’ disease, or American trypanosomiasis, whose etiological agent is the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is an important public health concern in Latin America. At least 8 million people acquired the infection via the arthropod vector or another mechanism of transmission, such as blood transfusion or vertical transmission from mother to child (9). In Chile (11), the parasitose is ende...

Automated complement fixation test for the detection of anti-trypanosoma cruzi antibodies.

An automated method to detect TrypanosomÐ crozi antibodies is described, using complement fixation with an adequate automated equipment. Fifty five serum samples from patients lvhere Trypanosoma cruzi antiþodies were detected by Almeida's technique for complement fixation and by fndirect Immunofluorescence test, were studied by this method. The conclusion is that this automated üechnique can be...

Trypanocidal activity of some endemic species of Satureja in Iran

Trypanosoma cruzi, a hemoflagellate protozoan (family Trypanosomatidae), is the ethiological agent of Chagas disease, which is affecting 16-18 million people, with more than 100 million exposed to the risk of infection. Higher plants are a potential source of new drugs to improve the treatment of Chagase disease. Until recently, Rutacea, Meliaceae, Simaroubaceae and Burceraceae families have be...

Serological diagnosis of Chagas' disease: a potential confirmatory assay using preserved protein antigens of Trypanosoma cruzi.

The diagnosis of Chagas' disease relies mostly on data provided by immunologic tests, but inconclusive results often require elucidation, especially in blood banks. When six different types of Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigote antigens were studied by an immunoblotting assay (IBA), a preserved protein antigen (Ag PP) was found to present the most interesting immunochemical features because of its ...
